Temporary full-time position available for a small animal veterinarian on the island of Ambergris Caye beginning the end of July. Minimum six month commitment desired. As the only full-time veterinarian on the island you will function as an important member of the local community. The purpose of this position is two-fold: to provide much needed care to an under-served community, but also to provide a learning experience for the veterinarian. Our out-going veterinarian and wonderful long-term veterinary assistants help to orient the in-coming veterinarian. A rewarding and eye-opening experience regardless of your number of years in practice. Learn what it is like live and work as a veterinarian in a developing country. Housing, bicycle, and cell phone provided. Small stipend will cover your living expenses in Belize. As an additional perk, one local two-tank dive will be provided per week at Ambergris Divers.
Due to the nature of the work, at least one year of private veterinary practice is required. An excellent opportunity for recent graduates to gain confidence, skills, and independence in their practice. For those who have been practicing for many years, this is an opportunity to remember why you became a veterinarian in the first place.
Requirements: An open mind, an adventurous spirit, a desire to make a difference in a community, resourcefulness, creativity, a tolerance for "roughing it" and "island time", an ability to manage your resources, an ability to adapt your diagnostic and treatment plans to what is available in Belize, while continuing to practice "the best medicine" possible for your patients :)
Additional Salary Information: 20% production with base stipend and above benefits

About San Pedro Animal Hospital
San Pedro Animal Hospital is located 2 blocks from the beach, in the town of San Pedro, on the island of Ambergris Caye, in Belize, Central America. Although our company is privately owned, it functions in some ways as a nonprofit. It was opened in 2009, as a response to the need for a proper animal hospital owned and operated by a veterinarian. At that time the only veterinary care available was at a humane society operated by volunteers. San Pedro Animal Hospital's mission is to provide veterinary medicine at a standard of care as close to that of the United States as possible, despite its location in a developing country with limited resources. To this aim, we offer a six month to one year temporary position for veterinarians from the United States or other countries. The position's goal is to give the community access to a high level of veterinary care, while at the same time giving the veterinarian a unique and unforgettable experience, living and working in San Pedro, Belize.
